OpenAI began showing clearly labeled sponsored placements below responses to U.S. adults on the Free and Go tiers. Ads were matched to the topic of the conversation, past chats and prior ad interactions; advertisers received only aggregate performance data.
- No ads for users under 18 (using account age data and age prediction) or near health, mental health or political topics.
- Free users could opt out of ads in exchange for fewer daily messages; Go users could avoid ads by upgrading.
- Users could view and clear ad interaction history, dismiss ads, see why an ad appeared and manage personalization.
- Trade reports cited an approximately $60 CPM and a $200,000 minimum commitment for the pilot.
