- Target CPA/ROAS bidding changed so budget-limited campaigns deliver at target instead of overperforming
Starting August 17, 2026 (completed globally August 27), budget-limited campaigns using Target CPA, Target ROAS or Demand Gen Target CPC bid more consistently toward the set target rather than beating it. A campaign set to a $10 CPA that had been achieving $5 will move toward $10. Applies to Search, Shopping, Performance Max, Demand Gen and Travel campaigns. Source
- Advertisers using Enhanced Conversions plus Customer Match were auto-enrolled in conversion-based lists
Menachem Ani shared the notification on X that Google would automatically turn on conversion-based customer lists for eligible advertisers, with data processing starting August 18 unless they opt out. Source
- Smart Bidding Exploration launched for all feedless Performance Max campaigns; beta for Shopping ads
Smart Bidding Exploration is now available globally in all languages for Performance Max campaigns without a product feed, and in beta for Shopping ads in both feed-based Performance Max and standard Shopping campaigns. Advertisers set a ROAS tolerance to reach converting users from unexpected queries. Source
- Promotion mode launched in beta for Search and Performance Max to schedule temporary ROAS and budget changes
Promotion mode lets advertisers schedule a 3-to-14-day window in which ROAS tolerance is temporarily loosened and extra daily budget is added, then automatically reverts. Compatible with daily and campaign total budgets. Source
- Demand Gen campaigns using view-through optimization on Discover were moved from CPC to CPM billing
Anthony Higman shared a notification that from July 15 Demand Gen campaigns using VTC optimization on Discover would be billed per thousand impressions; disabling VTC optimization opts out. Source
- Conversion-based customer lists to be auto-assigned a customer type from August 18, 2026

- Bid strategy labels reverted from 'Maximize conversions with a Target CPA' back to 'Target CPA'/'Target ROAS'
Advertisers began seeing the shorter names in the interface; Google confirmed through its Ads API blog that bidding behavior was unchanged. Source
- A 'Good price' label was spotted on Shopping product carousels
Sachin Patel shared the label on X; Search Engine Roundtable could not replicate it and noted Google rotates many such labels. Source

- Target CPA and Target ROAS decoupled from Maximize strategies in Google Ads naming and API strategy types
From June 2026 Google Ads renamed 'Maximize conversions with a Target CPA' to 'Target CPA' and 'Maximize conversion value with a Target ROAS' to 'Target ROAS', prioritizing standalone TARGET_CPA and TARGET_ROAS strategy types over Maximize strategies with optional targets for applicable campaign types such as Search. Developers should review parsing of BiddingStrategyType and campaign creation logic. Source
