Google launched Universal Cart in the United States across Search AI Mode and the Gemini app. Shoppers hold products from several retailers in one cart, get price-drop and back-in-stock alerts, see promo codes, and either check out with Google Pay or hand off to the merchant's own cart. Merchants remain the seller of record.
The cart runs on Google's Shopping Graph, which Google says covers more than 60 billion continually refreshed listings. Google named Nike, Sephora, Target, Ulta Beauty, Walmart and Wayfair plus many Shopify merchants as offering the simplified checkout, and said merchants provide order confirmations and customer support directly. Support for YouTube and Gmail is to follow.
Google announced the feature at I/O in May 2026 and shipped it in the US ahead of the holiday season. Its launch post did not cover merchant fees, product ranking or data sharing. Checkout handoff runs through the Universal Commerce Protocol, and reporting puts merchant participation behind a technical implementation, an interest form and Google selection, with only 26 detectable UCP implementations found across more than three million sites.
